Press Statement Following the International Conference of Heads of State and Government on Ensuring Russian Gas Supplies to European Consumers.Part 2
January 17, 2009
The Kremlin,Moscow
Пресс-конференция по итогам Международной конференции глав государств и правительств по вопросу обеспечения доставки российского газа потребителям в Европе
17 января 2009 года.
Москва,Кремль
It is an important question and we will give it a serious answer: we would like this to happen as quickly as possible, literally in the next few days. Why? Because it has already created big problems for a number of states, our partners, and a considerable number of people. As for suggestions, I can tell you frankly that both the Russian and Ukrainian parties made some suggestions during the discussion. I will name them to you. In any case, I believe that some of these proposals can be used to achieve a final agreement.
What does this mean? In order to finalise an agreement on the resumption of deliveries and the operation of Ukraine's gas export system we need to agree on proper controls. So that there is no unauthorised siphoning, or what we are now more rigorously calling the wrongful appropriation of gas, a system that determines how to pay, how to calculate what should be paid, and what technological regime will be maintained in the pipline.
As I have already said, we made a proposal several days ago this issue was discussed in the government cabinet among other places. It is that part of the gas Ukraine needs to fully operate its gas transportation system be acquired by an international consortium of companies these companies would own that gas, the gas would be put into the pipeline system and, accordingly, the system would become functional. This is one of the proposals.
The second proposal, which will no doubt be subject to review, involves granting a credit to the Ukrainian side so that it will be able to pay for the gas that it needs today. Incidentally, our Ukrainian partners have just expressed their intention to pay up front for a whole bunch of things. Well, this is good, we can only welcome such a position. Now we need to work on some of the finer points concerning more specific details.
There is another idea that has been put forward that I find very interesting. This idea was raised during my conversation with Ukrainian President Viktor Andreyevich Yushchenko. It would involve a state guarantee for Russian gas suppliers that would last for a certain period of time. This sort of government guarantee is a complex instrument in technical terms, but today during the discussion at this meeting something simpler was suggested, namely an irrevocable letter of credit issued by a major bank in a European country, with partial coverage that the Ukrainian side could provide. If the bank issued such a letter without such coverage, that would be very good. The reason for claiming the money from the letter of credit would be the claim of unauthorised gas siphoning sent in by the Russian company, the supplier of gas, and would be confirmed by the group of observers that we have put together with the participation of the European Union. Bearing in mind that our Ukrainian partners have once again today confirmed that they have no intention of siphoning off gas, we hope that if such a letter of credit was to be issued no payment would ever have to be made on it. This letter of credit would simply work to defend the short term interests of the Russian Federation, until we can come to some sort of agreement with Ukraine on the conditions of supply of gas for Ukrainian consumers, because that is a separate issue.
By the way, I would like to say that in her speech the Prime Minister of Ukraine specifically stated that Ukrainians are fully committed to the transit of gas to Europe and to the agreement on gas deliveries to the territory of Ukraine for Ukrainian consumers, and that they believe that their first priority is to transport gas to European consumers. We hope that this statement will prove to be a guide to action. Here perhaps is what we can say now.

bit.flow circular
According to ancient mythology a monster known as the minotaur lived on the island of Crete. King Minos ordered a labyrinth to be built for the minotaur. The Athenians had to offer him human sacrifices, until Ariadne gave a ball of thread, “Ariadne’s thread”, to the ancient hero Theseus. He entered the labyrinth, killed the minotaur, and found his way back out with the help of the unrolled thread.
BIT.FLOW represents a visual and conceptional association to this ancient myth, in which the alleged chaos (the labyrinth appeared to the Athenians as a con- fusing structure of twisted paths) is defeated by unequivocal order. At the same time BIT.FLOW is concerned with an issue raised by French philosopher Michel Foucault in his interpretation of the ancient myth: What would happen if Ariadne’s thread would be irrevocably torn apart?
Navigation through the modern world is no longer linear, the thread cannot serve as a model for its description. In BIT.FLOW dozens of tiny pieces of the meta- phorical “red thread” constitute a chaotic swarm of particles or bits, the smallest elements of information. At a certain point, they are unexpectedly recombined in the oder of Ariadne’s thread and allow for perception. The signs produced by BIT. FLOW move through the tube in a particular order from beginning to end. But we can only recognise and perceive this bulk of information at particular times, from certain perspectives, as letters – a complex interplay: order in chaos – chaos in order.

Paul Haggis The Hypocrite
In August 2010, Paul Haggis wrote a letter resigning from the Church of Scientology allegedly over the fact that someone from one of its Churches publicly supported Proposition 8. But what is hypocritical is the fact that Haggis was raised a Catholic and is the driving force behind raising financial support for a Catholic priest in Haiti. Yet the Catholic Church is the largest and most vocal religious body in the world against gay marriages and homosexual behavior. The Catholic Church issued the following statement concerning Prop 8 without a peep from Haggis.
Saturday, 17 January 2009
A Statement of the Catholic Bishops of California in Support of Proposition 8
"Only the rock of complete and irrevocable love between man and woman is capable of acting as a foundation for a society that can be home to all human beings." - Pope Benedict XVI, addressing the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family, May 11, 2006
The issue before us with Proposition 8 is "marriage"—an ancient, yet modern, human institution which pre-exists both Church and government. Marriage, history shows us, is intrinsic to stable, flourishing and hospitable societies. Although cultural differences have occurred, what has never changed is that marriage is the ideal relationship between a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation and the continuation of the human race.
With all this in mind, we, as bishops, offer counsel to our Catholic people in California in their response to this radical change in California's public policy regarding marriage.
First, same-sex unions are not the same as opposite-sex unions.
Second, we need to recall that marriage mirrors God's relationship with us-and that marriage completes, enriches and perpetuates humanity.
Third, we need to remember that we are all children of God possessed of human dignity and that each of us is created in God's image.
Fourth, we must pray and work for a just resolution of this issue which is so important to the well being of the human family.
Fifth, as citizens of California, we need to avail ourselves of the opportunity to overturn this ruling by the California Supreme Court.
And finally, we strongly encourage Catholics to provide both the financial support and the volunteer efforts needed for the passage of Proposition 8. And—please exercise your citizenship and vote in November.
Maybe the resignation letter that Haggis wrote in August 2010 should have been sent to head of the Catholic Church. It would have read like this:
Pope Benedict XVI,
As you know, for ten months now I have been writing to ask you to make a public statement denouncing the actions of the Church. Their public sponsorship of Proposition 8, which succeeded in taking away the civil rights of gay and lesbian citizens of California - rights that were granted them by the Supreme Court of our state - is a stain on the integrity of our organization and a stain on us personally.
Our public association with that hate filled legislation shames us. I called and wrote and implored you, as the official spokesman of the church, to condemn their actions. In our early phone conversations I told you that whoever used our name to associate us with this kind of bigotry had no place in an organization that preached against human rights abuses. I told you I could not, in good conscience, be a member of an organization where gay-bashing was tolerated. You assured me you would put this right immediately. I told you that this could not be swept under the carpet but must be dealt with publicly - just as the Catholic Church’s statement of support for Prop 8 last year was public, and may well have influenced the votes of the thousands of Catholics living in California.
I felt strongly about this for a number of reasons. One is that you and I both know there has been a hidden anti-gay sentiment in the Catholic Church for a long time. I have been shocked on too many occasions to hear Catholics make derogatory remarks about gay people, and then quote the bible in their defense. While I confronted these people on every occasion, it did not seem to make much of a dent.
The church’s refusal to denounce the actions of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly. I can think of no other word. Silence is consent, Benedict.
I refuse to consent.
You allowed our name to be allied with the worst elements of the Christian Right. In order to contain a potential “PR flap” you allowed our sponsorship of Proposition 8 to stand. Despite all the church’s words about promoting freedom and human rights, our name is now solidly in the public record alongside those who promote bigotry and intolerance, homophobia and fear.
The fact that the Mormon Church drew all the fire, that no one noticed our role in it, doesn’t matter. I noticed. And I felt sick. I wondered how the church could, in good conscience, through the action of a few and then the inaction of our leadership, support a bill th

2012 Vision - Rich-Karlene
Rich- Vision Letter
I confess that I was surprised to hear you say you were afraid that your baggage from your family of origin would somehow irrevocably damage us or our family. I can certainly understand that fear once I heard you articulate it, but it does surprise me because that is not how I see you at all. One of the things I love most about you is that you are always diligent to learn and grow, always looking for areas to work on and change, and you are quick to admit you are wrong and repent when you are convicted. Those qualities enable me to rest and not be afraid because God is faithful to show you what you need to know when you need to know it and you are faithful to respond to His work in your life. Because I know that your heart’s desire is to listen to God and walk in His ways, even when I don’t agree with you on something, I can be at rest and wait for God to work out the unity between us.
Because I have this great faith in your desire to hear God and follow him and because of the safety that provides me, I think sometimes I miss seeing you where you are at because I am seeing you for what you are. I am sorry for missing you and for my lack of patience with your struggles. I do think God desires for you to be more integrated, for the confidence and assurance that you project to the world around you to actually be a manifestation of the certain and unshakable state of your soul.
This letter is hard for me to write because it seems that God is taking you on a journey where he designates each step and I don’t have much of a say in it. But as I was reflecting on the last few years of the journey, it became apparent to me that He really is working to make you fearless.
A few years ago I was stunned to learn how this fear that was hidden from me for decades, had directed and shaped so much of our relationship and our lives. As I think about our last few years, I see God working to make you truly fearless. He says that the antidote to fear is perfect love, and you certainly haven’t experienced that much in your relationships. But I do see Him working that out in you, teaching you how to receive perfect love from Him, how to receive a poor reflection of His perfect love from me and others, and how to magnanimously give an ever more perfect love to the ones you are called to love.
I think you are right to say that you heal people through the unusually comprehensive and intrusive relationship that you offer. And yet, the fear taints it and erodes it around the edges, sometimes creeping into the very center. That is the vision I see of you, a glorious relating without even a blemish of fear.
Perpetual positive forward motion is one of your great gifts, but it can be wearying for those of us riding on that train with you. I see you learning to live in a more understanding way, learning how to just be and enjoy the place where you are at. There is growth in being, in the stillness, in the enjoyment of the place you are at on the journey. You will never be at this place again. God has something special and unique right here, and this is your only opportunity to gain and enjoy it. And because of your commitment to forward momentum, I never worry that we will become complacent or staid.
I think that is the vision I am starting to see for us, always growing and stretching, but actually enjoying the process with each other. Patiently waiting for God to initiate the next step and gratefully accepting whatever it is.
So that, my dear (the first man to capture my heart, in case you were wondering) is how I see you. Fearlessly confident in who God has made you and what He has asked you to do, extending a glorious, clean, complete and healing relationship to an amazing variety and number of people, but most importantly to me and our family, and finding life in every step of the journey, not in merely arriving at an elusive destination.
Thank you for choosing me to enjoy the journey with you. I love you.
Karlene
Karlene,
I love you. I am grateful for the you that cannot die and is always beautiful. I count on you and trust you before our father. I am thankful for this opportunity to declare to others the passion in my heart for your indestructible beauty. I see with the kids a quiet, patient love emerging from you. God is with you and I see it.
When I look into you I am overwhelmed by a beauty ...
